As Americans start to get excited about the holiday season, filled with family, football and turkey, many expats are left at a loss for things to do over the Thanksgiving Day period.

To help fit in with the local traditions, we’ve selected our favorite tips from our American friends:

  1. Crash a Thanksgiving dinner. Get yourself invited to a true American family style Thanksgiving from your coworkers or neighbors and experience the tradition at its best.
  2. Throw your own version of a Thanksgiving dinner –Ditch the Turkey and stuffing (we all know that’s for Christmas) and switch it out for a Roast, Yorkshire pudding and some Eton mess for dessert.
  3. Get into American football – There’s no denying it. Apart from Turkey and family, Thanksgiving also means a huge weekend of American football. Grab some mates, find am American with no family commitments to help explain the rules, and embrace the game.
  4. Take in the Macy’s Day parade – for expat newbies to New York City, this famous street parade is an absolute must.
  5. Volunteer – During the Thanksgiving holiday lots of organizations need an extra set of hands. Give thanks by lending a hand dishing food, serving coffee, or knitting blankets for animal shelters.
  6. Adopt a Turkey – 46 million turkeys were consumed over Thanksgiving weekend in 2012. You can adopt a Turkey and save it from its potential Thanksgiving fate. There are numerous Turkey Sanctuaries around American that take a one-time donation fee that feeds and houses your new ‘family’ member.
  7. Shop Shop Shop! Stand in line for Black Friday – only the biggest shopping holiday of the year!
