The first-ever short film shot and edited at 35,000 feet

Joining forces with Virgin America and Virgin Australia to shoot Kat Coiro’s Departure Date was a real thrill for us. Filming six miles high across three continents in nine days, the film was shot onboard three scheduled flights alongside our regular passengers. Naturally, we were attracted to both the concept and challenge of this groundbreaking venture. After all, there’s a first time for everything, right?

Exciting times

“It’s a really exciting time for the Virgin brand as a whole, watching the three airlines collaborate together in a unified way for one campaign. We were able to really work with them to create a film that was not only groundbreaking… but really being able to take a collective vision that all three airlines shared…"

Jason Felts, CEO Virgin Produced.

When Jake (Mad Men’s Ben Feldman) allows love-at-first-sight to pass him by, he experiences a true awakening with a little help from his somewhat eccentric co-passengers. This warming film about challenging norms and inventing your own way of doing things will capture even the cynics among us.

In conjunction with Eleven and Virgin Produced with star appearances from Philip Baker Hall, Luis Guzmán, Janeane Garofalo and Max Brown.

Making it happen

See how the team overcame the strict confines and challenges of on-flight filming by using the latest Canon C300 and creating customised modulations of regular film equipment. Voila!
