Sure, we love the West Wing, but there's more to D.C. than the President
You've seen it at the movies and on TV... but probably just the same bits, over and over. So let's get something out of the way. Washington's iconic buildings, Capitol Hill and the White House, are stunning, fascinating, and well worth a visit.
But whatever you do, don't forget to make time for all the other brilliant stuff when you take a cheap flight to Washington D.C. See the original Declaration of Independence at the U.S. National Archives, take a tram ride through the 446 acre Arboretum and catch a gig at the legendary 9:30 Club. And that's just for starters.
More to do on holiday in Washington D.C.
Celebrate spring D.C. style
In late March and early April, the city is the setting for the National Cherry Blossom Festival, a fortnight of performances, exhibitions and events in amongst a sea of flowers. Just gorgeous.
A real treasure trove
The National Museum of American History, known to locals as "America's attic", houses hidden treasures as diverse as Dorothy's ruby red slippers and the original Star Spangled Banner.
Who's who in the zoo
The National Zoological Park is not only free, it's fabulous. Giant pandas Mei Xiang and Tian Tian are probably the zoo's most famous residents, but the other 2,000 animals are pretty cool too.
Check out the view
For a panoramic view of the city without queues or crowds, visitors in the know skip the Washington Monument and head downtown to the Old Post Office Pavillion.
Take a moment
The Vietnam Veterans Memorial will be a poignant part of your visit. Pay your respects and share stories with the countless relatives who come here to remember.
