Kenya’s the undisputed king of safari and with forest-fringed beaches competing for your time, you’d be forgiven for hot footing it to the nearest Jeep. But don’t be so quick to escape from the hustle and bustle of the city as soon as you’re off your flight to Nairobi. There’s more on offer here than you might think.
Haggle your way through diverse markets to discover traditional clothing, jewellery and African souvenirs to squeeze into your suitcase on your return Nairobi flight. For some action after sunset, relax with the locals over a cocktail on Langata Road and dance the night away to some hot salsa tunes.

Nairobi might not be known as a culinary paradise, but there are still some hot spots. The infamous all-you-can-eat buffet at the Carnivore Restaurant even includes ostrich and crocodile.

Make a new friend at the Langata Giraffe Centre. The centre raises endangered Rothschild Giraffes and gives you the chance to get up close to these elegant creatures.
Fancy a safari with a skyscraper backdrop? Then visit Nairobi National Park, just seven km from the city. If you’ve the time, the stunning Lake Nakuru National Park’s worth a trip.
Explore the former African home of author Karen Blixen, famous for penning the novel, Out of Africa. Now a museum, the beautiful gardens are also worth a wander.
Spend the afternoon with the resident artists of this cultural centre and enjoy performances of traditional dance and song from Kenya’s 16 different tribal groups. It’s a little touristy, but still a must see.
