It's 20 years since Lagos was lost the title as Nigeria's capital, but the city doesn't seem to believe it. For a start, it's still home to the country's main business district, on Lagos Island. Nigeria’s movie industry ('Nollywood') is based here too, and its vibrant music scene is famous throughout Africa and beyond.
Take a flight to Lagos and you’ll soon see it's not the place for a relaxing break – it's perhaps a bit hectic for that. Although there are some sandy beaches on the Atlantic coast. But if you're up for an adventure in one of the busiest cities in Africa, grab a ticket to Lagos.

Hit the beach
Lagos has more than a dozen gorgeous beaches, from the lively Bar Beach on Victoria Island, to the more peaceful Lighthouse Beach, which you might just have to yourself.

About an hour away from Lagos, in the town of Abeokuta, you'll find the sacred Olumo Rock. Hire a guide to explain its history on the breathtaking walk to the top.
Get ready to haggle
Sharpen up your bargaining skills and head to Jankara Market, which sells everything from fabric and jewellery to traditional medicine. Haggling isn’t just permitted, it's expected.
Escape to the country
For a complete change of pace, head to the Lekki Conservation Centre. Take the 2km boardwalk trail, keeping a lookout for monkeys, birds and even crocodiles.
