CARRY-ON BAGGAGE ALLOWANCE
Manual wheelchairs, sticks, crutches or walking frames are carried free of charge and are not included in the normal carry-on baggage allowance.
Small mobility aids such as crutches, sticks or wheelchair accessories may be taken into the cabin, provided they can be safely and securely stowed. Note: If these items are being transported on behalf of someone else who is not travelling, then in this instance any normal excess baggage charges will apply. ELECTRIC MOBILITY DEVICES
Some batteries may be classed as hazardous materials and therefore will need special packaging prior to loading in the aircraft hold. Please provide us with 48 hours advance notice.
Special Assistance will require certain information about your electric mobility device to ensure safe carriage and stowage - for example:
GENERAL PRINCIPLES
Wheelchair users will be able to remain in their own wheelchair to the gate where there are lifts or ramps available to transport the wheelchair safely down to the aircraft.
Airports vary around the world and where these facilities are not available, wheelchairs will be required to be checked in. For health and safety reasons, airport staff are unable to manually lift equipment up and down stairs or narrow ramps. Note: The airport authority at Newark International Airport requires that passengers check-in their electric wheelchair and use an airport wheelchair to get to the departure gate. If use of an airport wheelchair is not possible, passengers must present themselves at the departure gate no later than 60 minutes prior to departure to allow for security screening and loading of the electric wheelchair. This also means that wheelchairs may have to be reclaimed at the baggage hall, rather than made available at the aircraft doors at your arrival destination. Where this applies, an airport wheelchair will be made available for your use until your own can be reclaimed. If you are a wheelchair user who cannot manage stairs or are unable to walk, please contact Special Assistance, in order that we can make arrangements and advise on the facilities available for getting on and off the aircraft, as these can vary depending on the destination you are travelling to. Most airports have a level entry jetbridge walkway connected directly to the aircraft door. However, at some destinations the aircraft cannot be connected to the terminal building and aircraft stairs are used, such as some of the smaller islands in the Caribbean. In this instance we can make arrangements for you to use our own dedicated piece of equipment called a Stairclimber. This is a mechanically operated, battery powered chair that is designed to embark or disembark disabled passengers using the stairs leading up to the aircraft. Note: Our London Gatwick Twilight Check-In service can accept manual wheelchairs for check-in the night before your flight, but does not have sufficient storage for electric mobility devices. IS YOUR MOBILITY EQUIPMENT INSURED?
Passengers travelling with mobility equipment are strongly advised to have adequate insurance to cover loss or damage.
