Virgin Atlantic permits each passenger a free baggage allowance. Depending on your final destination, an excess baggage fee will apply for any additional baggage you wish to check in over your free allowance.

For passengers exceeding their baggage allowance, please allow extra time at the airport to pay the excess.

Our check in facilities will close 60 minutes prior to the scheduled departure time of the flight. Passengers who fail to complete check in procedures by this time will not be able to travel.

Virgin Atlantic operates two types of baggage allowance:

• Flights to/from the USA, Caribbean, Cuba, Jamaica, Kenya and Nigeria are based on the number of pieces carried.
  
  
• Flights to/from South Africa, India, Mauritius, China, Hong Kong, Japan, Dubai and Australia are based on the weight of baggage being checked in.
  
  

Please note: In accordance with the Heath and Safety Executive, no bag can weigh more than 32kg (70 lbs), regardless of the appropriate amount.

This safety measure, which will applies to all airlines and destinations from the UK, was introduced to reduce strains and injuries amongst baggage handling staff. Passengers who exceed the weight limit will be asked to repack their excess baggage into smaller units and pay the appropriate charges before they can check in.

Economy passengers travelling on flights to/from the USA, Caribbean, Cuba, Jamaica, Nairobi, Kenya and Nigeria are allowed up to 2 pieces of baggage, each weighing up to 23kg as their free allowance.

Therefore, passengers wishing to check in baggage weighing more than their allowance of 23kg, will be charged GBP35 / USD70 per piece of baggage for each flight taken.

Economy and Premium Economy passengers, wishing to check in additional pieces of baggage over the free allowance, (more than 2 pieces of baggage), will be charged GBP90 / USD150 per bag.

Upper Class passengers, wishing to check in additional pieces of baggage over the free allowance, (more than 3 pieces of baggage), will also be charged GBP90 / USD150 per bag.

Flights to/from South Africa, India, Mauritius, China, Hong Kong, Japan, Australia, Dubai and the UK use the weight system. Excess baggage charges are based on 1.5% of the highest normal direct adult one way Premium Economy Class fare (W class) irrespective of the fare paid by yourself, and are per kg excess.

Please note, these rates are a guideline only and may be subject to change. Charges should be checked at the airport.

For flights departing Hong Kong, India, Japan to UK and between Hong Kong and Australia, the excess baggage charges are based on a percentage of the highest normal direct adult one way IATA Economy Class fare (Y class).
