DANGEROUS ITEMS IN HAND BAGGAGE

In addition to the items detailed in our baggage allowance pages, the following items CANNOT be carried in your hand baggage:

  • Toy or replica guns (plastic or metal)
  • Catapults
  • Household cutlery
  • Knives with blades (of any length)
  • Paper knives
  • Razor blades
  • Darts
  • Scissors *
  • Sporting bats
  • Billiard, snooker, pool cues
  • Cigarette lighters including butane, absorbed-fuel (Zippo-type), electric/battery-powered and novelty lighters (for passengers travelling to and from all Caribbean destinations and India)
  • Matches (for passengers travelling to and from Caribbean) **
  • Hypodermic syringes ***
  • Tradesmen's tools ****
  • When departing Delhi the Indian authorities will not allow pungent spices, fruit, loose or spare batteries, including 1.5 volt pen light cells, to be carried in the aircraft cabin
* Scissors with blunt/round-ended blades (metal or plastic) less than 6cms in length or scissors with metal blades and pointed tips under 3cms are permitted. US airports will allow metal scissors with pointed tips and a cutting edge four inches or less, as measured from the fulcrum. US airports will also allow metal scissors with blunt tips, plastic scissors and ostomy scissors.

** Safety matches are permitted in limited quantity to destinations outside the Caribbean.

*** If you have a medical reason that means you need to inject during the flight you are permitted to carry syringes in the cabin. However, you must be able to produce medical evidence, such as a doctor’s letter when you check in or at security screening. The letter should be kept with you at all times. All medication must bear a label indicating the name of the medication and the person to whom it is prescribed.

**** US airports will allow screwdrivers, wrenches, pliers and other tools, (except crowbars, drills, hammers, and saws) seven inches or less in length.

Limited quantities of medicines and toiletries that you need during the flight may be carried.

Please note: Security personnel are permitted to remove any article which in their reasonable opinion may be used or adapted for causing injury or incapacitation of any person.


OTHER DANGEROUS ARTICLES THAT CANNOT BE CARRIED

For safety reasons, dangerous articles such as those listed below (list includes but is not limited to) must not be carried in your hand or checked baggage:

  • Cigarette lighters/matches are not permitted in checked baggage to any destination.
    • For flights to/from the UK you are permitted to carry one cigarette lighter on your person
    • For flights to/from the USA you are permitted one cigarette lighter in your hand baggage
    • For flights to/from the Caribbean and India you are not permitted to carry matches or lighters
  • Compressed gases- deeply refrigerated, flammable, non-flammable and poisonous such as butane, oxygen, liquid nitrogen, aqualung cylinders
  • Corrosives such as acids, alkalis, mercury and wet cell batteries
  • Explosives - Fireworks, flares, sparklers or other explosives
  • Flammable liquids and solids such as lighter fuel, paints, thinner and firelighters
  • Radioactive materials
  • Briefcases and attache cases with installed alarm devices
  • Oxidising material such as bleaching powder, peroxides
  • Weapons such as disabling sprays e.g. tear gas, mace, pepper spray
  • Firearms and a limited quantity of ammunition may be carried subject to proper packaging but you must contact us in advance
  • Poisons and infectious substances such as insecticides, weed killers and live virus materials
  • Other dangerous articles such as magnetised material, offensive or irritating materials
Many of these listed articles can be carried as air cargo, provided they are packed in accordance with cargo regulations
