A Virgin Atlantic Boeing 747 in-flight

GREAT NEWS ON THE GREEN FRONT

We're always looking for new ways to reduce our environmental impact, and earlier this month we are pleased to have flown a Boeing 747 from London Heathrow to Amsterdam using sustainable second-generation biofuel.

It was the first time that a commercial aircraft ran biofuel in-flight, and it marks an exciting step towards our vision of what the industry as a whole can do to reduce carbon emissions.

Sir Richard Branson, President of Virgin Atlantic, said: "This breakthrough will help Virgin Atlantic to fly its planes using clean fuel sooner than expected. The demonstration flight will give us crucial knowledge that we can use to dramatically reduce our carbon footprint. Virgin Group pledged to invest all its profits from its transportation companies towards developing clean energy and with this breakthrough we are well down the path to achieving our goals."

The demonstration was made in conjunction with Boeing and GE Aviation, and forms a key part of a major initiative to discover sustainable sources of aircraft fuel for the future.

Other environmental groundwork got underway last year when we began replacing our Airbus fleet with Boeing 787 Dreamliners, which use almost 30% less fuel. We also launched a Gold Standard Offset program last November, so you can offset your carbon footprint by contributing to community projects around the world with a positive environmental impact.
