WHAT ARE TIER POINTS?

As a Flying Club member, when you fly with Virgin Atlantic or our Flying Club airline partners*, in addition to earning miles, you will earn tier points.

Tier points allow you to earn seriously rewarding Flying Club benefits. So the more frequently you fly, the more points you'll earn which means you will progress from Flying Club Red to Flying Club Silver and then onto Flying Club Gold membership. The higher the tier, the better the benefits.

How do I get to Silver and Gold?

Remember, as a Flying Club member with an online account you can log in and check your tier points balance at any time.

FLY THROUGH THE TIERS - HOW TO GET TO SILVER AND GOLD

tier point cycle diagram
It's easier than you think to achieve Flying Club Silver or Gold membership. Simply earn 15 Tier points in 12-13 months and you'll reach Flying Club Silver. If you earn 40 Tier Points in 12-13 months you can fly straight through to Flying Club Gold.

Why Calculate tier points between 12-13 months?

Tier points are calculated in this way, because you could find that you upgrade to Silver or Gold at the beginning or the end of any particular month. Your tier points are calculated from the current date of the month to the first day of the same month a year previous. Your account will be automatically upgraded once you have achieved the required tier points for either Silver or Gold membership.

Confused? Let's look at some examples:

If today's date is 31 March 2008 and you've just had your last few tier points credited to your account to get you to either Silver or Gold, your tier points are calculated from the 1 March 2007 to 31 March 2008 - a full 13 months.

However, if those last few tier points are credited at the beginning of the month, such as 1 March 2008, your tier points are calculated from to 1 March 2007 to 1 March 2008 - a full 12 months.

The dates shown in the above examples would then make up your new 'fixed membership year' so you'll need to eanr more tier points during this time to keep your Silver or Gold membership.

When do tier points expire?

Tier points are valid for a full 12 months. But the great news is that your tier points don't reset when you achieve Flying Club Silver membership, so if you're quick enough, those same tier points could get you all the way to Gold membership! Once you've achieved Gold, your tier points are set to 0 ready for you to earn 30 tier points to renew your membership.

LIFT OFF, KEEP ON FLYING TO RETAIN YOUR BENEFITS

tier point renewal diagram

Once you’ve earned your status, you’ll naturally want to keep it! So to requalify you need to keep on flying and earning more tier points. To keep your Silver status you need to earn at least 10 tier points, and to keep your Gold status you need to earn at least 30 tier points. Your fixed membership period will be 12-13 months dependant upon the day you reached the new tier level.

As an example:

If you earn enough tier points to step up a tier to Gold on 15th April 2007, you have from 16th April 2007 until 30th April 2008 to earn another 30 tier points to keep yourself at Gold. If you do this, your next membership period will be a full 13 months from 1st May 2008 until 31st May 2009 to renew again.
