VIRGIN ATLANTIC'S SUSTAINABILITY JOURNEY

We love flying and you love travelling, so, at Virgin Atlantic, we’re taking practical steps to make our business as sustainable as possible to make sure we minimise our impact on the planet. Here are some of our highlights to date:

  • In 2006 Sir Richard Branson committed his share of profits from his travel firms, such as Virgin Atlantic and Virgin Trains, over the next 10 years, to projects that combat climate change.
  • In 2007 we launched the first ever Gold Standard Carbon offsetting scheme for passengers, which our passengers could also access onboard.
  • In 2007 we started serving fair-trade tea, coffee and muffins onboard. And some organic fair-trade ice cream too!
  • In 2007, we ordered 15 B787-9 Dreamliners, which will burn around 27% less fuel than the planes they will replace.
  • In 2007, we launched our environment policy, which states our key environmental commitments and activities.
  • In February 2008 Virgin Atlantic became the first airline in the world to operate a commercial aircraft on a sustainable biofuel blend.
  • In September 2008, Virgin Atlantic became a founder member of the Sustainable Aviation Fuels Users Group. The groups' objective is to champion the development of biofuels that meet a strict set of sustainability criteria.
  • In 2009, Virgin Atlantic became a founder member of the Aviation Global Deal (AGD) Group, who are committed to aviation playing its part in global CO2 emissions targets to be agreed by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in Copenhagen this year.
