MUSCULAR DYSTROPHY - £90,000 (UK)

Provision of mobile equipment to aid children with Muscular Dystrophy
Muscular Dystrophy are committed to raising funds for research into muscle diseases that reduce the level of child life expectancy, and they also help fund specialist equipment that can enable these children to lead more fulfilled and independent lives. Change for Children has helped to fund specialist equipment for children in the UK to aid their comfort and mobility.

It is essential that children with muscle disease have access to specialist equipment that enables them to enjoy the same educational and recreational opportunities as able-bodied children.

CHILDREN WITH AIDS CHARITY - £88,000 (UK)

Each financial year, CWAC aims to help approximately 2000 children under the age of 18 who are infected or closely affected by HIV/AIDS in the UK.

CWAC provides essential household items (e.g. clothes, school uniforms, toys) when a parent is either too ill to work or must stay at home to look after a child. It also organises group respite breaks for isolated children not coping well living with HIV.

To take a look at how the funds were spent, you can access our case study here.

SEKENANI SCHOOL - £34,000 (KENYA 2008)

Our latest project is what Richard himself described as "an amazing project". This was the transformation of a run-down school in Kenya by ten Flying Club Gold members with our project team. The members managed to contribute £34,000 from sponsorship and donations to aid the development of the school.

The project ended with Richard joining over 600 local schoolchildren and VIPs at the opening ceremony at the Sekenani Primary School in the Maasai Mara in Kenya. The project was made possible by a collaboration with Sarova Hotels, Water for All, events company Watermark and of course, our 10 Gold Card frequent flyer volunteers. A video of our project can be accessed below.

PROJECT HOPE UK (CHINA) - £67,000

Child outside Shanghai Children's Medical Centre
In China, cancer ranks in the top 3 causes of death in children. In recognition of this, we raised funds to enable Project HOPE UK to work in partnership with the Shanghai Children's MedicalCentre, one of the leading Chinese institutions for the treatment of child cancers, to establish its own Oncology Care Training Programme.

The money raised has played a significant part in providing palliative care and support for 4,000 children in its first year.

SAMSON CHIVATSI SCHOOL - £52,000 (KENYA)

Child at the Samson Chivatsi School
In a formerly destitute and dangerously tribal community in Kenya a little pocket of excellence, the Samson Chivatsi School, has been created for the local children. With very little funding or support, the Samson Chivatsi School looks after more than 700 children who previously had limited prospects of raising themselves out of poverty. Despite all of this, however, the school is achieving spectacular results.

Change for Children has assisted the continuation of this trend by providing funds for a secondary school to be built on the existing premises and providing the children with an excellent standard of secondary education. Each child will leave the school with well-rounded practical learning and the confidence to shine as a result.

ONBOARD APPEAL FOR CHINESE EARTHQUAKE VICTIMS - £48,000 (CHINA)

Onboard appeal for Chinese Earthquake victims
Following the tragic events of the Sichuan earthquake earlier in May, Change for Children operated a special collection on the behalf of Care for Children's China Earthquake Appeal. Since Monday 12th May, the earthquake in China has so far claimed over 70,000 lives, with as many as 10 million people across the Sichuan province who were directly affected by the disaster.

Recognising the need for a speedy response to the impact of the earthquake, the charity has worked tremendously hard in coordinating an appeal where all the funds they raise will go towards the support of children and their families directly affected by the crisis.

You can access our Care for Children case study here. To look at more information from our China office about our recent cheque presentation to Care for Children, you can read the report here.

IJAMIDO - £106,000 (NIGERIA)

Renovation of orphanage in Lagos
As a place the 150 children in Lagos call home, the orphanage provides not only a safe and loving environment, but it also ensures that educational and medical needs are met. The massive amount of funds raised has enabled the orphanage to renovate the existing overcrowded buildings which were in desperate need of repair and also helped towards building new accommodation including additional sleeping quarters and a much needed kitchen and dining hall.

CHITRAKOOT - £83,000 (INDIA)

Chitrakoot: The medical team providing health care to the children of the village
Set up in 1998, the Chitrakoot project was set up in Northern India in 1998 to bring free health care to the villages using the resources and skills of volunteer doctors, dentists and nurses from Europe. Children in the area, who have facial and mouth disfigurements, cannot obtain treatment in the very poor rural areas of India. Problems such as cleft palate, burns and tumours go untreated and cause great distress to whole families.

The medical teams fund their own expenses, treat the patients, start health education and fund the transfer of patients to big cities for very specialised treatment. Change for Children's support has allowed the charity to visit another 300 villages and to expand the service at the base in Chitrakoot with general anaesthesia, patient beds and X-ray facilities being supplied.

SOUTH AFRICAN CHILDREN'S CHARITY TRUST (SACCT) - £77,000 (SA)

SACCT's 'Cotlands' project
The funds raised were intended to help alleviate one of SACCT’s most pressing projects. 'Cotlands' is one of South Africa's biggest independent, non-profit organisations caring for more than a thousand abandoned, abused and AIDS-infected children at any given time. The Hospice section, a first of its kind in South Africa, provides a warm, loving environment for children who are terminally ill, as well as those infected and affected by HIV/Aids.

The money raised from the Change for Children appeal helped to provide respite for over a 1000 abandoned, abused and AIDS-infected children.

RACHAEL'S CHILDREN'S TRUST (RCT) - £77,000 (INDIA)

RCT schoolchildren in the playground
RCT's Zindagi project benefitted from Change for Children by being able to invest much-needed funding into health screening, dental screening and the provision of medication for children, enabling them to focus on their educational needs.
