FILM IS GREAT

Film is Great

We are delighted to make 2014 the year for celebrating the coming together of Great Britain and China in film. Earlier this year, the highly anticipated Sino-UK Film Co-Production Treaty was signed in Beijing, sparking the creation of a series of cross-cultural projects to mark the new partnerships between the two nations in producing creative, quality film.

Seizing on this enthusiasm, the ‘GREAT Britain on Screen’ campaign will run throughout the year, promoting the best of UK on screens to film and TV fans and industry professionals across China.

We want to take this opportunity to demonstrate the UK’s position as world-leaders in film, and showcase the array of destinations you can visit to bring you one step closer to your favourite piece of British cinema.

As part of this, the GREAT Britain campaign has teamed up with Virgin Atlantic Airways to bring you the ‘Film is GREAT’ campaign: the first ever British online film festival in China, working with one of the country’s largest online video portals, LeTV.com.

Britain’s rich culture and heritage, along with its film expertise all combine to make it an ideal location for filming, something which has been drawing film-makers to Britain for years. VisitBritain research shows that nearly half of potential visitors to Britain want to visit places they have seen featured in films or TV, which now accounts for nearly 10% of all tourism.

Through this campaign, we want to take you on a journey through the UK’s many film and TV destinations: travel back in time by visiting Highclere Castle, the home of Downton Abbey; knock on Sherlock Holmes’ door at 221b Baker Street and take a peek at some travel books in Notting Hill’s famous little Travel Bookstore.

Kicking off in August, we invite you to watch two months’ worth of the best in British film, also taking the chance to introduce you to the internationally acclaimed world of UK short films. We look forward to bringing you no less than 30 award-winning and nominated films, starring big British names, such as Benedict Cumberbatch and Dame Judi Dench and directed by some of the UK’s most talented names in the industry.

A highlight of the festival will be the premier of the short film, Freeze Frame, produced especially for the ‘Film is GREAT’ campaign by ShortsTV. Written, produced and directed by an award-winning British film crew, the film will reveal the UK as one giant film-set, waiting for you to explore!

Please stay tuned for the Great British Online Film Festival - August – October 2014
